The Guided Autobiography Method.
The Guided Autobiography Method (GAB）is a structured approach to memoir writing. It offers a nurturing environment to organise and reflect on your memories, helping you create a strong foundation for your creative work, career, and personal growth.
I am a Birren Center certified Guided Autobiography Instructor. I believe in the joy and growth that writing and sharing life stories can bring. I am also a memoir and poetry writer.
My education in Public History led me to legacy writing and personal history. I believe that everyone has a story to tell, and that stories should be passed down from one generation to the next.
Writing our life stories can boost our optimism and self-awareness. When shared, those stories can also bolster a community’s sense of self and well being.
What GAB is:
A small group and confidential setting to write generatively and share your written work,
Curated themes and prompts to guide introspection on impactful life events, two pages at a time,
A comfortable space to enhance self-acceptance and connection with others,
Facilitation of life transitions through personal history writing,
A therapeutic way of taking stock of past experiences, as well as reflecting on life’s next steps.
Our class format
What GAB isn’t:
Therapy,
A workshop to get craft-related critique from others,
A writing course with assigned readings and one-size-fits-all assignments.
Over five to eight weeks, we delve into our life stories through themes like branching points, family, money and career, etc. You are free to choose from a range of prompts within each theme.
Each class runs for two hours. The first hour is dedicated to free-writing and exercises to stimulate creativity; the second is spent sharing your written stories and feedback.
